Location! Location! Location!

Cluttered Kitchen CounterJust like in real estate, location of kitchen items is of prime importance to kitchen efficiency.  If things are located too far away from where you use them, are hard to get to or hard to find it will make fixing meals less appealing and it will take you far longer to put a meal on the table.  Have you ever been in the middle of fixing pasta and at a crucial point you can’t find the strainer you need because someone put it on a top shelf that you can’t reach? Have you ever had to move several items to get to your bag of flour and meanwhile the cookies in the oven burned?  Organizing your kitchen so that items are located in the right place will help prevent this from happening again.

An example of locating items in the kitchen for efficiency is keeping all of the items to make coffee in a cupboard next to the coffee maker.  That means keeping the coffee mugs, sugar, coffee, filters, and other coffee making necessities right next to the coffee maker. Another example would be to have all the dishes for heating food in the microwave next to the microwave.

  • Keep kitchen items close to where you use them the most.
  • Placement of frequently used items should be in a place that is easy for you to reach.  (Not too high and not too low.)
  • Store kitchen items in a way that makes sense to you and that makes life easier for you.
  • Move large and seldom-used items to outer storage areas, like the pantry, garage, hall closet, or basement.

Organizing Kitchens

Organizing the kitchen is a great place to start to have a more organized life. Because a lot of our family activities are done in and near the kitchen, keeping clutter from taking over means having systems and storage for needed items.  If the thought of organizing your kitchen sends you into a panic, not to worry, we have some easy to follow tips and tricks so you can get your kitchen organized in less time.

The first thing you need to know is that organizing your kitchen is going to take a little time, but will be well worth the effort. Schedule 2 or 3 hour blocks of time and pick one section to work on at a time, preferably when the kids are not at home. Before you get started you will need some trash bags, recycle bins and some boxes to collect donation items in.

The best place to get started is on what is the most visible, the kitchen counter tops. Kitchen counter space can be an issue in some homes because of clutter or the lack of counter space.  Take everything off the counter and clean thoroughly. Put away anything that you don’t use every day. If you only use the blender once in a while then take it off the counter to use the space for something you do use often. If it doesn’t need to be on the kitchen counter, move it! Use the wall or under cabinet mount as much as possible to free up the counter space for food preparation. Get rid of unused items, especially small appliances and gadgets that don’t work.

Travel with Medications and Emergency Information

Emergencies: Keep a list of all important medical information like allergies, medications, Dr.’s phone numbers, Medical Insurance and emergency contact information for each person traveling. Put the typed information in a waterproof bag and keep a copy with you at all times. Each person should have a copy with them, especially children.  You can type up on computer in a small font size to keep the information from getting too bulky.

Having emergency information is especially important when traveling with children: carry a small picture of each child, along with information on their height, weight, hair and eye color, any special distinguishing marks, or special needs. Each child should have emergency contact information on them in case they get separated from you.  Try Safety-pining a small plastic snack size bag with the emergency information inside their shirt.Keep a mini emergency kit in your luggage: include antibiotic ointment and alcohol wipes in single use packets, a few adhesive bandages in a couple of sizes, some type of pain reliever, and a pair of mini scissors. This can fit into a small plastic zipper bag, or you can buy a prepackaged small traveling first-aid kit. (Note: can’t take scissors in your carry-on baggage.

Organizing Fall Decorations:

Want to know a shortcut for decorating for Fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving?

  • When decorating think “Quality, Not Quantity”.  Use a few well chosen decorations rather than a lot of small decorations.  This will make set up and clean up must faster and easier, plus it will keep the home or office space easy to clean up during the fall season.
