Just like in real estate, location of kitchen items is of prime importance to kitchen efficiency. If things are located too far away from where you use them, are hard to get to or hard to find it will make fixing meals less appealing and it will take you far longer to put a meal on the table. Have you ever been in the middle of fixing pasta and at a crucial point you can’t find the strainer you need because someone put it on a top shelf that you can’t reach? Have you ever had to move several items to get to your bag of flour and meanwhile the cookies in the oven burned? Organizing your kitchen so that items are located in the right place will help prevent this from happening again.
An example of locating items in the kitchen for efficiency is keeping all of the items to make coffee in a cupboard next to the coffee maker. That means keeping the coffee mugs, sugar, coffee, filters, and other coffee making necessities right next to the coffee maker. Another example would be to have all the dishes for heating food in the microwave next to the microwave.
- Keep kitchen items close to where you use them the most.
- Placement of frequently used items should be in a place that is easy for you to reach. (Not too high and not too low.)
- Store kitchen items in a way that makes sense to you and that makes life easier for you.
- Move large and seldom-used items to outer storage areas, like the pantry, garage, hall closet, or basement.
