Organizing Closets

Whether your closet is small or large, organizing closets can make a big difference in your life. Closets are the place you keep things out of sight, but that can also mean “out of sight, out of mind”. If your closets are full it might be because they contain several items you no longer use or need.

Does your closet seem to be laughing at your attempts to organize it? Maybe it is time to get the last laugh by getting that closet organized.

Closet Organizing

Have you attacked the closet, pulling out items randomly and piling them up all around the room only to end up with a bigger mess? Read on to learn the secrets to getting your closets organized.

Like most organizing projects, organizing your closet will go better if you do some planning. Schedule a few hours to tackle the project. Gather some boxes to sort into and a garbage can for those no longer usable items. Start on the floor next to the door and work your way into the closet taking each item out of the closet into the light of day.

If you need help to make a decision on what to do with an item, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I use/wear this item?
  • Do I need this item?
  • Does this item look good on me?
  • How many of these do I need or use? (Set quantity limits)
  • What would happen if I get rid of this?
  • When was the last time I wore/used this item?
  • Could someone else use this instead of it sitting in my closet?
  • Is the space this item is taking up worth it?
  • Does this fit in with the life I want to live?

If you are holding onto an item because you “might need it someday”, think about the space it is taking up versus the chance you might actually need it. Is it still worth keeping it? If you are keeping it because you paid “good money” for it, sell it or donate it and get a tax break, then write it off as a learning experience. Keeping it just keeps reminding you that you spent that money on something you don’t use, let it go.

Once you have weeded out the items you don’t want or use, take stock of what you have left.

  • Measure shelves and spaces to determine containers sizes.
  • Use closet organizers and space saving devices to maximize your closet storage.
  • Hang up items and use over the door shoe racks or clear pouches to hold items.
  • Add hooks and accessory hangers near the closet door.
  • Stacking plastic drawers, cubes and containers can be a big help in organizing your closets and making items easy to reach.
  • Designate areas in the closet for specific types of items.
  • If you have someone in the house who is ADD try labeling the shelves and containers so they know where to return items.
